What Is the Gospel?

Exercise time! Don't just sit there! Sit there and think!

Give me your best answer in a few words to the question,

"What is the gospel?"

None of that, "Well, it's God's word/the New Testament/the Nicene Creed/etc." No additives or omissions. No embellishments and no illustrative stories. No paste-ins from "Bible Gateway." No preacher jokes.

No lurkers and no slackers.

C'mon. If you're a follower of Christ, you know what the gospel is. Right?

So what words would you use to share it?

How long does it take to say it?

Put the gospel according to you in the comments below. Be a witness for the gospel, right here, right now.

Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Peter,[b] and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

Did I get it right?

This is what Paul said the Gospel is. I stole it from him.

No Alan, that's cheating...didn't you get the "no paste-ins from Bible Gateway" or did you miss that part?

But Paul's answer does sound correct. I was gonna say that God loved me enough to come to this earth and live, die, then live again so that I can live with Him forever!

And that sounds like good news to me!

Christ was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life and died on a cross, the death of a sinner. Yet, since he lived a perfect life, he carried my sins to that cross. But the good news! When he carried my sins to the cross, he arose from the grave and is waiting for me at the throne of God.

I am his, not because of anything I have or haven't done, but because of the gospel!

"Gospel, means good news, the good news is we have another chance."

to explain the gospel took four books, I can't explain it in just a few words:)

whose gospel? I assume you mean the Good News of Jesus, but there were many that had gospels.

But the good news of Jesus is at its core, Death, Burial and Resurrection. His, ours, the world's.

The Gospel is the "good news" that God loved us enough to save us thru Jesus (who also loved us enough). Like any other news, we can accept it or reject it. Discipleship is our sign of acceptance.

The Gospel is the greatest story of Hope for All Mankind ever told. It is the story of Someone who thinks we (humankind) are still worth messing with. It is a message that we are to live and share every day.

God wanted it to be like it was before satan messed it up by tempting adam and eve with that piece of fruit and thus failing to follow God's rules. so He sent His Son to die so that we could be like adam and eve were before "the fall."

He wanted us to live in paradise with Him, so He had His Son clear the way.

The Gospel is confessing, with eyes shut tight and tears streaming down in chest-wracking sobs, the worst part of yourself, the vilest sins of your past, the blackness deep inside that has kept you distant from God your entire life, to a fellow believer. Feeling that when you open your eyes, the look of horror and disappointment on their face will finally confirm the way you've always felt about yourself.

Then, when the breathing has steadied and there is nothing left to do but to open your eyes, you take a deep breath, slowly raise your chin, and with mostly fear but a fleck of faith open your see nothing but love, acceptance, forgiveness, grace, and the face of Jesus Christ himself pouring from her eyes.

That was the Gospel for me.

(And thank you for asking the question in that exact way.)

Though maybe that was what you might call an illustrative story, it was what was on my heart when I first read the question.

After teaching nursery/pre-school classes for years - I would say the gospel is... God made me; God loves me; God looks after me; I don't have to be afraid. Now those essentials skip out the whole Christ part of the gospel so... The gospel for school age kids: God made me; God loves me; God loves me so much that he sent Jesus. Jesus loves me.
Then there's the gospel for teens and older: God made me. God loves me. God loves me so much that he sent Jesus. Jesus loves me. He loves me so much that he died for me. I don't have to be afraid, because Jesus also died for me.

The "good news" is that Christ has paid in full the debt owed to God by sinners and by His righteous life, His sacrificial and substitutionary death, and victorious triumph over the grave, He now freely gives forgiveness of sins and eternal life to those who will take Him at His word and trust only Him.

(To attempt to cram all the beauty of the gospel message and the glory of the gospel Man into a few words is akin to painting a masterpiece with only one brush and one color)

God loves wicked sinners and the story of Jesus and his work shows how much.

His peace,

Outstanding, folks! Keep 'em coming!

And, yes, Royce, I know I'm severely limiting your choice of brushes and your palette. Thanks for the thumbnail!

(Alan, you still owe us your own words, dude.)

mmlace said...

Keith, what about your own words, dude? What do you say the gospel is???

God so love me that His Son died on a tree so that I might go free, and die to me.

The gospel is the fulfillment of the promise of the Messiah as foretold by the prophets of old.

Now, go and find out what the term "Messiah" means...

Enoch said...

God, through Christ's death and resurrection, forgives and heals the evil in us so that he can adopt us into his family so that we can live a life that reflects his character by trusting him.

bruced said...

Friend, has the evil in you been healed? Have you been adopted in his family?
